Those who are trying to learn singing need to improve their voice quality. The only thing is, how to do it properly and not hurt the vocal tract.

Now, it does not really matter what your voice quality its, if it is light or it is heavy. Light voices are those with the lyrical quality while the heavy voices are the more powerful but not so lyrical voices. If you are not satisfied with the quality of your voice, what you need is a little bit of care and the proper nutrition to get it right on track. Below are some tips by singorama.

  • Drink plenty of water. This will not only flush the system, but is the perfect tool to hydrate the body and get that vocal tract flexible. A dry throat will only get irritated and stressed out to the point of ruin.
  • Eat the right foods. Avoid the three most dangerous chemicals from entering your body: high fructose corn sugar (artificial sweeteners), caffeine and alcohol. Any of these three can damage the vocal tract, as well as lead to major diseases.
  • Exercise always goes a long way, even for the voice. Just do not use heavy weights. The heavy lifting can damage the vocal folds to ruin and it would be impossible to get them back to health.
  • Before singing, practice vocal warm ups. Start off from the midrange and then gradually go up the levels. This will prepare the vocal tract properly so you could reach the higher registers easily. Warm up the voice before attempting to sing. Never sing cold.
  • Warm ups are a must, but so is not yelling, screaming, continuously clearing the throat and laughing out too loud. All these are an absolute no-no to the singing voice.
  • When you sing, do not ever strain your voice. You can do this effectively by using your diaphragm to control your voice quality.
  • The position of your head can affect your voice. To reach the higher registers, do not tilt your head to the sky, pull it down to a level position. The tilting of the head may look dramatic onscreen or onstage, but it ruins the vocal tract physically.
  • If you are a woman and you are currently prescribed with birth control pills, make sure that it does not have any progesterone hormones. These hormones can deepen the voice and ruin the lyrical quality of the voice, permanently.
  • When singing, sit up or stand up straight with your chest out. Posture does wonders to the voice quality and can affect your voice range as well.
  • Avoid singing too much. Although they say that practice makes perfect, the singing voice should not be overused and abused. Stick to three to four hours of singing and then rest.
  • Voice quality will only deteriorate if smoking.
  • Avoid using anesthetics for these can mask the stress on the voice from being felt. This can lead to straining the voice and that is never good.
  • A very logical advice is to assess how you feel. If you sing and it is painful, stop singing. Rest your voice.
  • If you like to sing, dance and party, it is well and good. But do avoid the smokey places like bars and clubs. The smoke ruins the voice quality, not just pollute the lungs and cause lung cancer.

Learn to breath when singing. The breath support is one of the key factors in getting that key and holding it. Listen to Streisand, Lambert, Dione and even Pempenco. They know how to control their breath and hold that key, flawlessly.
